The Department of Periodical Storage was established in 1990 after the commissioning of a new building of the Scientific Library (Drahomanova Street, 17). The Department maintains, preserves, and organizes the periodical library stock, which was accessioned to the Scientific Library after 1940, plus provides services to the readers. During 1990 and until September 1991, the periodical stock was transferred from the main book depository (Drahomanova Street, 5) and formed the foundation of the Sector of Document Storage. The department began to provide services to the readers in September 1991. During its existence, some changes took place in its structure: Literature Loan Desk had been working from September 1991 to 2011 (Drahomanova Street, 17), and the Periodical Reading Room became a part of the Department in 2013, which by that time belonged to the Scientific Literature Service Department. Now, the Department is divided into two sectors: Sector of Document Storage and the Periodical Reading Room.

At present, the periodical stock contains about 700000 items, including 13000 newspaper series.

The periodical stock is divided into publications in Cyrillic and Latin scripts. The languages of periodicals are Ukrainian, Russian, Bulgarian, Polish, Slovak, Czech, English, German, French, Japanese, Chinese, and others. These periodicals are the official publications of state and public institutions with normative or directive materials, scientific periodicals of universities and academic institutions, scientific-and-technological, popular scientific, sociopolitical, as well as literary and artistic periodicals.

The Periodical Reading Room receives a new acquisition of newspapers and magazines for the current year.

Readers, without any pre-order, can obtain new acquisitions.

Ordered publications are stored in the Reading Room for 10 days. If necessary, the reader may extend the storage period for further work. In addition, readers may obtain permission to copy periodicals from the librarian, but they should pay for the production of digital copies of periodicals issued up to 1945, in accordance with the order of the rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv № 0-166 as of 03.11.2016 on paid services at the Scientific Library.

An exhibition of new periodical accessions can be found in the Reading Room. The exhibition is updated every week.

All new acquisitions in the exhibition are located according to the branches of knowledge.
